A night on the road

Sleeping in a camper in 🇧🇪 Belgium

Sleeping in the vehicle is restricted in Belgium and depends on where you stop. A tent needs a campsite or the landowner's word. A pitch runs about €25 a night.

The same rules the planner warns with when it puts you to bed in Belgium. Where a rule is what everyone does rather than what a statute says, this page says so.

In the vehicle

Restricted — it depends where

Belgium — motorway rest areas are theft-prone; prefer aires or campsites. Municipal rules vary — read the signs.

In a tent

No right to pitch

Prohibited, and the two regions differ. Flanders says it plainly — you may not simply pitch a tent in nature — and offers a bivakzone network instead: free, bookable online, three pitches a zone, one night only. Wallonia's forest code allows overnight stay solely in designated areas and otherwise keeps you on the paths.

🔥 Flanders: only at a permanent fire ring, under a four-colour fire-risk code; outside nature, 25 m from a forest edge and 100 m from heath, with consent and written notice. Wallonia: fire banned except in arranged zones, and within 25 m of woodland. Smoking in nature is always prohibited in Flanders.

Free and nearly free places to stay

  • ⛺ tentfree

Flanders runs a bivakzone network — free, booked online, about 14 zones across the provinces with three pitches each and a hard one-night limit. It exists precisely because wild camping is otherwise prohibited, so it is the lawful way to do this in Belgium.

What a night costs

Per night, for two. A figure marked derived is computed from the country's price level, not read off a price list — the plan says the same.

Plan the drive and we place the nights for you: the free lawful spots first where you sleep in the vehicle, a pitch where you asked for one, each priced the same honest way.
