Sleeping in the vehicle is restricted in Latvia and depends on where you stop. A tent is allowed in places and with conditions. A pitch runs about €18 a night.

Restricted — it depends where
Latvia — nothing bars sleeping in a parked vehicle, but where you may put it is controlled: in state forest only on roads and natural driveways, and in the Baltic coastal protection belt moving, stopping or standing off-road is prohibited outright.
In a tent
Allowed, with conditions
A real everyman's right, but narrower than Estonia's: it covers STATE and municipal forest only. Private woodland is not included and the owner may close it, provided it is signposted. Two hard statutory exceptions catch people out — the coastal dune belt and the protection strips along surface water both ban pitching outside arranged places.
🔥 Open flame is banned in forest and bog during the fire-hazard period — declared each year by the State Forest Service, with NO statutory dates, so the "1 May–30 September" often quoted is not in the instrument. No campfire within 2 m of a growing tree: a FIRE distance, not a camping one.

Free and nearly free places to stay

The state forest company maintains 300+ equipped free rest areas — tables, benches, a roofed shelter, a grill — and overnighting in the forest is free and needs no notice unless you are over 60 people or staying more than a week; three nights is the limit with a vehicle. Do not count on a toilet or firewood being there.
