A night on the road

Sleeping in a camper in 🇳🇴 Norway

A night in the vehicle is generally accepted in Norway. A tent has a public right to pitch (allemannsretten). A pitch runs about €28 a night.

The same rules the planner warns with when it puts you to bed in Norway. Where a rule is what everyone does rather than what a statute says, this page says so.

In the vehicle

Generally accepted

Norway — the roads authority says rest areas are for a break, not for camping, and publishes no hour or night limit; treat it as ordinary parking plus whatever the signs say. Allemannsretten covers your tent, never the vehicle.

In a tent

There is a right to pitch · allemannsretten

The only Nordic country that puts real numbers in the statute: at least 150 m from an inhabited house or cabin, and no more than 2 nights in one place without the owner's consent — though neither limit applies high in the mountains or far from habitation. Cultivated land (innmark) needs consent either way.

🔥 Open fire is banned in or near forest 15 April – 15 September, unless the municipality allows it or fire plainly cannot spread (Forskrift om brannforebygging §3).

The instrument: Friluftsloven (LOV-1957-06-28-16) §9

Free and nearly free places to stay

  • ⛺ tentfree

Allemannsretten makes a tent free anywhere in utmark — 150 m from the nearest house, two nights in one spot, neither limit applying high in the mountains. For a roof, Statskog's åpne buer are free and unbooked. Do NOT assume the famous DNT huts are: those 600+ cabins are paid, around 340 NOK a bed for members and 520 for non-members, and booked ahead.

What a night costs

Per night, for two. A figure marked derived is computed from the country's price level, not read off a price list — the plan says the same.

Plan the drive and we place the nights for you: the free lawful spots first where you sleep in the vehicle, a pitch where you asked for one, each priced the same honest way.
