A night on the road
Sleeping in a camper in 🇫🇮 Finland
A night in the vehicle is generally accepted in Finland. A tent has a public right to pitch (jokamiehenoikeus). A pitch runs about €25 a night.
The same rules the planner warns with when it puts you to bed in Finland. Where a rule is what everyone does rather than what a statute says, this page says so.
In the vehicle
Generally accepted
Finland — sleeping in the vehicle on a road or in a car park is not itself restricted, but driving or parking off-road into the terrain needs the landowner's permission (Maastoliikennelaki §4). Jokamiehenoikeus covers your tent, not the vehicle.

Everyman's right. You may stay and camp temporarily wherever you are allowed to walk — but Metsähallitus publishes NO number of nights and NO distance in metres, only "temporarily" and "not too close to dwellings". Yards, plantings and cultivated fields are out. In national parks camping is only at designated sites, and strict nature reserves need permission.
🔥 No open fire during a wildfire warning, and never on someone else's land without permission. A closed camping stove falls outside the ban (Pelastuslaki 379/2011 §6).
The instrument: Customary right, not codified in one act; off-road driving barred by Maastoliikennelaki 1710/1995 §4
Free and nearly free places to stay
- ⛺ tentfree
Two free options, and the second is the better one. Jokamiehenoikeus makes temporary camping free almost anywhere you may walk. But in the national parks — where camping is restricted to designated spots — those spots are properly equipped and cost nothing: a marked tenting area, usually a lean-to or hut to cook under, a fireplace with firewood provided, and free parking at the trailhead. All maintained by Metsähallitus. The free ones are the OPEN wilderness huts (autiotupa) and lean-tos — first come, one night, no booking, and you leave firewood cut for the next person. Anything named "reservable" or "rental" is paid and booked through Eräluvat. Plan around the open ones and a Finnish trip needs almost no bed budget.

What a night costs
- In the vehicle €0 · derived
- A campsite pitch €25 · derived
- A hostel bed €57 · derived
Per night, for two. A figure marked derived is computed from the country's price level, not read off a price list — the plan says the same.
Plan the drive and we place the nights for you: the free lawful spots first where you sleep in the vehicle, a pitch where you asked for one, each priced the same honest way.
