How a visitor pays

Most motorways have barriers: take a ticket, pay by card or cash at the exit, or carry a Via Verde or a compatible badge (Bip&Go, Bip&Drive, Telepass Europeo). A few roads read the plate and have no booths — among them the A28 south of Esposende towards Porto: a foreign car needs a means of payment before driving them, either EasyToll (a bank card linked to the plate, at the border stations or online, 30 days), a prepaid Tollcard, or a Via Verde Visitors device. Paying afterwards at a post office is only for Portuguese plates. Since 1 January 2025 the A22 along the Algarve, the A23, A24 and A25, the A4 Transmontana, the A13 Pinhal Interior and two A28 sections are toll-free. Lisbon's two Tagus bridges are charged northbound only.

Pay with a tag

A Via Verde badge is read on every barrier and on the electronic-only motorways; Via Verde Europa, a Spanish Via-T such as Bip&Drive, a French Bip&Go or Ulys and an Italian Telepass Europeo also pay the Portuguese roads, including the plate-only A22, A23, A24 and A25.
