How a visitor pays

Barrier motorways: take a ticket at the entry, pay at the exit by card (Visa and Mastercard everywhere, cash at the marked lanes), or with a télépéage badge such as Bip&Go or Ulys that opens the barrier and also works in Spain, Portugal and Italy. A few sections have no barriers at all — the A79 in the Allier and the A13/A14 west of Paris — there you pay online within 72 hours on the operator's site or register the plate in advance. A motorhome pays class 2, or class 3 when it is 3 m high or more or over 3.5 t; a car with a caravan pays class 2 when the caravan is 2–3 m high and class 4 when the outfit is 3 m or more (VINCI's class definitions). The Mont Blanc and Fréjus tunnels are flat tolls on their own.

Pay with a tag

A télépéage badge from Bip&Go (Sanef), Ulys (Vinci) or Fulli opens the barriers without stopping and is charged monthly; the same badge works on the barrier motorways of Spain, Portugal and Italy and in the Mont Blanc and Fréjus tunnels. Spanish Via-T badges such as Bip&Drive, a Portuguese Via Verde Europa and the Italian Telepass Europeo work in France too.
