Gas bottles and LPG on ferries and in tunnels: operator by operator
A caravan's or motorhome's gas bottles and an LPG-fuelled vehicle meet different rules on every ferry and in every tunnel — valve shut, valve sealed, a limit on cylinders, a clearance in advance, or no entry. From the operators' own pages; every line opens to the words it rests on.
What changes at the border
- LeShuttle and Viking Line do not carry LPG-fuelled vehicles; Color Line carries them like other cars, the Mont Blanc tunnel on declaration at the toll, P&O only factory-built ones.
- Every ferry wants the gas valve shut; Eckerö and Viking Line want it sealed too, Fjord Line fixes its own seal at check-in.
- At most 3 cylinders and 47 kg on Stena, DFDS and P&O; at most 4 cylinders on Finnlines.
- Fjord Line counts gas cylinders as dangerous goods: a written clearance from the captain, requested at least 72 hours before check-in.

How we checked
Each line rests on official sentences — a law, an authority, a city or the operator's own page. A line reaches the page only if its quoted words are found again on the live source page (where the site lets us check), three independent automated readings judge that the quotes support it, and a second researcher who never saw the first answers was asked the same questions. Where nothing could be confirmed the entry says so; we did not fill gaps from memory or from other lists.
This is a reading of the rules, not legal advice; the signs on the road, the operator and the police where you drive have the last word.

Can an LPG-fuelled motorhome take the Channel Tunnel?
No: LeShuttle prohibits vehicles powered by LPG, LNG, CNG or any other flammable gas. The ferries differ — Color Line carries LPG cars like others, P&O only factory-built ones, Viking Line none.
How many gas bottles may a caravan carry on the ferry?
Stena, DFDS and P&O: up to 3 cylinders, together under 47 kg; Finnlines: up to 4. Every operator wants the valve shut for the crossing.
