How fast may a caravan or a motorhome go? Country by country

The top speed for a car + caravan and for a motorhome under and over 3.5 t, from each country's own law or authority — and where the rules change at the border. Every line below opens to the official words it rests on.

What changes at the border

  • The same caravan rig may do 80 km/h on the motorway in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Italy; 90 in the Netherlands, Slovakia and Spain, and in Belgium and France once car and caravan together are over 3.5 t; 100 in Switzerland; 60 mph (96 km/h) in the UK.
  • Tempo 100 does not travel: Denmark does not accept the German sticker, and the Danish approval is valid in Norway but not in Germany. In Germany it applies only on Autobahnen and Kraftfahrstraßen, in Denmark only on motorways.
  • In France a motorhome of 3.5–12 t may do 110 km/h on the motorway — a car + caravan over 3.5 t, 90.
  • Croatia's lower limits name trailers without brakes; a braked caravan is not among them (our reading of the law).
  • The UK draws its motorhome line at 3.05 t unladen weight, not at the 3.5 t maximum mass the other countries use.

How we checked

Each line rests on official sentences — a law or a transport authority. A line reaches the page only if its quoted words are found again on the live source page, three independent automated readings judge that the quotes support it, and a second researcher who never saw the first answers reached the same figures. Where nothing could be confirmed the country says so; we did not fill gaps from memory or from other lists.

This is a reading of the rules, not legal advice; the signs on the road and the police where you drive have the last word.

Questions and answers

Answered from this page's own data, as of 28 October 2026.

Does a foreign caravan get Tempo 100?

Only on that country's own terms. Germany needs an entry by the German authority in the caravan's papers; Denmark a caravan approved and registered in its register; Norway accepts another country's Tempo 100 approval if Statens vegvesen accepts that scheme.

Which weight counts, the car's or the combination's?

It differs: Austria adds the two maximum permitted weights, the Netherlands looks at the trailer alone, Sweden compares the caravan with the car's kerb weight, France uses the combination's PTRA, and the UK draws its motorhome line at 3.05 t unladen weight. Belgium's decree does not say how a combination's mass is counted.

Is a motorhome over 3.5 t a lorry?

Not everywhere. France gives a 3.5–12 t motorhome 110 km/h on the motorway, Germany 100 for one registered as a motorhome up to 7.5 t, Norway lifts its 80 cap for an M1 motorhome up to 7.5 t; Austria and Czechia keep it at 80.
