What a car, motorhome and caravan must carry — and whether it applies to a car from abroad

Warning triangle, vest, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, spare bulbs, wheel chock: country by country, from the law itself — and, where the text says so, whether the rule binds a car registered elsewhere. Every line opens to the official words it rests on.

What changes at the border

  • Belgium and Spain say it in words: a car registered abroad follows its own country's rules — in Spain triangles are fine, no V-16 light needed.
  • Norway's fire-extinguisher rule for motorhomes and caravans is written for Norwegian-registered vehicles.
  • Austria wants a wheel chock for every trailer other than a light trailer; Croatia spare bulbs on category O trailers too.
  • Poland wants a fire extinguisher in every car; Germany a first-aid kit; Belgian-plated cars all four: first aid, triangle, extinguisher, vest.

How we checked

Each line rests on official sentences — a law, an authority, a city or the operator's own page. A line reaches the page only if its quoted words are found again on the live source page (where the site lets us check), three independent automated readings judge that the quotes support it, and a second researcher who never saw the first answers was asked the same questions. Where nothing could be confirmed the entry says so; we did not fill gaps from memory or from other lists.

This is a reading of the rules, not legal advice; the signs on the road, the operator and the police where you drive have the last word.

Questions and answers

Answered from this page's own data, as of 29 October 2026.

Do I need Belgian equipment in a Finnish car?

No: Belgium's general vehicle regulation, equipment included, binds Belgian-plated vehicles; a car registered abroad must meet the International Convention on Road Traffic.

Does a foreign car need Spain's V-16 light?

No. Spain's traffic authority says a vehicle registered abroad, in international traffic, complies if it carries and uses warning triangles or the device its own country requires.
