Sleeping in your vehicle or a tent in Netherlands
- 🚐 In the vehicle: Allowed with real exceptions — depends on the place. Netherlands — there is no national rule; each municipality's own bye-law decides, and they differ. Parking a camper is usually fine for up to 3 days, but SLEEPING in it on the road is banned outright in places like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Texel. Fine €170. Use a camperplaats where you can.
- ⛺ A tent outside a campsite: No right to roam, and wild camping is banned by the local council's own bye-law (the APV) in thousands of municipalities — Natuurmonumenten puts it flatly: "écht wildkamperen is nergens in Nederland toegestaan". Staatsbosbeheer closed all 17 of its free paalkamperen spots in 2020, so guides that still mention them are out of date. (Municipal APV art. 4:18; fine €170 (Besluit bestuurlijke boete overlast openbare ruimte, A.19))
