Sleeping in your vehicle or a tent in Finland
- 🚐 In the vehicle: Generally accepted. Finland — you may sleep in a motorhome or caravan where parking is allowed and at a roadside lay-by if it hinders no one, evening to morning; putting out an awning, chairs, a table or a grill counts as camping, which everyman's rights do not cover. Driving or parking off-road into the terrain needs the landowner's permission (Maastoliikennelaki §4), and some national-park car parks now charge.
- ⛺ A tent outside a campsite: Everyman's right. You may stay and camp temporarily wherever you are allowed to walk — but Metsähallitus publishes NO number of nights and NO distance in metres, only "temporarily" and "not too close to dwellings". Yards, plantings and cultivated fields are out. In national parks camping is only at designated sites, and strict nature reserves need permission. (Customary right, not codified in one act; off-road driving barred by Maastoliikennelaki 1710/1995 §4)
