The Dolomites on foot

Pale towers of rock, meadows to the horizon, and a hut with a hot meal at the top of every walk.

A hiking trip through Italy, Austria and Germany — 6 days and about 280 km. It is built around 4 places the trip exists to include, all in Italy: Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago di Braies, Seceda and Seiser Alm. Those are kept whatever else you change; the nights, the meals and the stops in between are chosen for the road you actually end up on.

The Dolomites are mountains that look like they were drawn: pale grey towers going straight up out of green meadows, and a hut with a terrace and a plate of dumplings at the end of every path. This is walking country for people who like their views enormous and their lunches cooked. The classic day is the loop round the Tre Cime, three towers you can walk all the way around on a path a family can manage. Lago di Braies is the green lake below the cliffs that everyone has seen a picture of, best at seven in the morning before the car park fills. Seceda's ridge, reached by cable car from Ortisei, drops away in a wall of rock with the whole range behind it; the Alpe di Siusi is the largest high meadow in Europe, and you can walk it for a week without repeating a path. Late June to September is the season; the passes and the huts are open, and the wild flowers are at their best in early July. A camper is the right vehicle here — campsites sit in the valleys with the cable cars a short drive away — but it is a big vehicle on steep, narrow passes, so let the planner keep it on the roads it can take.

The places this trip exists for

Pinned, not suggested — the planner is required to include every one of them.

These are kept whatever you change. Everything else the planner picks is chosen for the road you end up on, and can be swapped.

One way it works out

From Munich · 6 days · about €357

A real plan, priced the way every trip here is: fuel per country you cross, tolls and vignettes from published tariffs, beds and food from derived local rates. It is one example, not an average — from another town it is a different trip, which is the point of the button below.

All 4 pinned places are kept — you set the start, the days and who's coming, and the road and the figures are worked out for your door.

The figures above were measured from Munich — yours will differ.
