A hiking trip through Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands — 6 days and about 1,049 km. Drive north through Jutland and the country slowly empties until there is nothing left but sand, sky and two seas. At Grenen, the very tip, you walk the last kilometre along the beach and stand with a foot in each — the Skagerrak and the Kattegat meeting in a line of broken waves. The painters came here in the 1880s for the light, and the light is still the point. On the way up, Råbjerg Mile is a migrating sand dune the size of a town, moving north-east at fifteen metres a year and burying whatever is in front of it; you climb it barefoot. Rubjerg Knude is the lighthouse that the dunes nearly took, moved inland on rails in 2019 and still standing on a cliff of blown sand above the North Sea. Aarhus, at the start, is a city of half a million with a rainbow walkway on the roof of its art museum and a harbour full of new architecture. Summer is long days and warm sand; May and September are quieter and the light is better. Campsites here are open and generous, the roads are empty, and a camper is the natural way to do it.
