Bruges is the medieval city that was too poor to modernise and so kept everything: the belfry, the canals, the guild houses, the almshouses with their white walls. It is a city to walk before eight in the morning and after eight at night, when the day-trippers have gone and the light on the water is the one the painters had. Twenty miles south the land goes flat, and this is the Western Front. Ypres was flattened and rebuilt brick for brick; at the Menin Gate the Last Post has been played at eight every evening since 1928. Tyne Cot, on the low ridge above Passchendaele, is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery there is, and the view from it explains the whole battle: they were fighting for that slope. The museum in the Cloth Hall tells it without flinching. Three days is right — one for Bruges, one for the Salient, one for the coast or Ghent on the way home. Go in the shoulder seasons; the cemeteries are open always, the belfry has a queue, and the Last Post is free and needs no ticket, only that you arrive early and stand quietly.
